English 2013 Summer Reading
Each student must complete summer reading for Sophomore English. The purpose of these additional readings is to promote independent life-long learning. Every student must read two books, one from each group of books listed. In addition to reading the books, a combination of activities must be completed to demonstrate comprehension of text and application to prior learning. Both activities are required for both books read during the summer.
- Reader’s Journal: The journal needs to be hand written
- Contained within a single notebook
- Include a reflective summary of daily readings
- Book review: 1-2 pgs should include student opinions and
- Reading Projects selected from the list below
- Must be completed for both readings.
- The same project may not be completed for both readings.
All activities are due the second Friday of the school year, and it is the student’s responsibility to turn in the assignments on time. Any students, who enroll after August 1, must speak with Mr. Wilson about completing the assignment. Read the rest of this entry
US History 2013 Summer Reading List

Each student must complete summer reading for US History. Students are to select and read one of the books from the list below. These books selected are meant to complement and accompany the two novels already selected for Mr. Rhodus’s Junior English Class. In addition to reading the books, a combination of two activities must be completed to demonstrate comprehension of the text and application to prior learning. Both activities are due the Friday, August 17 (second Friday of the school year). It is the student’s responsibility to turn in the assignments on time. Summer Reading Reminders
I hope everyone is having a great summer. With just over 10 days till school starts, I wanted to send out this small blog post reminding everyone to finish up their summer reading and complete their assignments. If you have not started your reading yet. Today is a great day to begin all work is due by Friday, August 19.
Soph. English Summer Readings

Every student must read two books, Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe and one from the selections list on the reverse page. By requiring students to read both a common text and a personal selection, students will be able to enter the classroom with a shared background and an individual experience. In addition to reading the books, a combination of activities must be completed to demonstrate comprehension of text and application to prior learning.

US History Summer Reading
Each student must complete summer reading for US History. Students are to select and read one of the books from the list below. These books selected are meant to complement and accompany the two novels already selected for Mr. Rhodus’s Junior English Class. In addition to reading the books, a combination of two activities must be completed to demonstrate comprehension of the text and application to prior learning.
- Historical Perspective Book Review: MLA Format (Typed Doubled space with resources page)
- 750-1500 words
- Combination of Book Summary and Book Review
- Reflect on how the well the book portrays the historical time period
- Include comments from at least three other Book Reviews (Professional or Amateur)
- This should be selected as a representation of the student’s learning and abilities.
Both activities are due the Friday, August 19 (second Friday of the school year). It is the student’s responsibility to turn in the assignments on time. Any students, who enroll after July 22, must speak with Mr. Wilson about completing the assignment
